The "Big Five" Valuation Disciplines (Up to 75% Total Weight)

Five topics—Financial Statement Analysis, Equity Valuation, Fixed Income, Ethical Standards, and Portfolio Management—each carry a 10%–15% weighting. In an exam scenario where all five appear at the top of their band, they represent an astonishing 75% of your total Level II exam score. Candidates cannot pass Level II by cherry-picking topics; comprehensive valuation fluency across all five is mandatory.

Case Vignette Mechanics

The Level II Vignette Format & The 12-Minute Pacing Rule

Understanding how Prometric item sets are structured is the key to managing your exam time.

Anatomy of a CFA Level II Item Set

Each item set consists of a narrative case study (1 to 2 pages of background text, financial statement exhibits, analyst commentary, and footnotes) followed by exactly 4 multiple-choice questions.

  • Sequential Ordering: Question 1 relates to Exhibit 1 or paragraph 1, Question 2 relates to paragraph 2, and so forth.
  • Independent Scoring: Missing Question 1 will not cause you to miss Question 2; input values are stated explicitly in each prompt.
  • Distractor Data: Exhibits contain intentional extraneous data to test whether you know which figures belong in the valuation formula.

The Crucial 12-Minute Pacing Rule

With 11 item sets to complete in 132 minutes during each session, you have exactly 12 minutes per vignette:

Skim Narrative & Exhibits:2 to 3 Minutes
Answer 4 Questions:8 to 9 Minutes (2–2.25 min/question)
Total Per Item Set:12 Minutes Maximum
Check-and-Flag Buffer:Pass or flag and move on at minute 12!
